Employee engagement calendar 2027: ideas for each month in Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Most engagement calendars are lists of international days. In Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the year that shapes your people runs on a different clock: Ramadan, two Eids, national days, the summer heat and the school year. A calendar that ignores that clock fills up with events people attend out of politeness — not moments they remember.
The short answer: build the year around three things. First, the local moments people already care about. Second, your business rhythm: results, appraisals, peak seasons, the survey. Third, one objective per quarter — belonging, recognition, wellbeing or learning. Then choose one or two moments a month at most, and do them well. In 2027, plan Ramadan first: it is expected to begin around 8 February, and International Women's Day and Saudi Founding Day both fall inside it. For example: a CEO letter in January, a Ramadan rhythm in February, the Eid return and Women's Month in March, safety recognition in April and Labour Day thanks in May; the full year is below.
How do you build an employee engagement calendar?
In six steps, starting with the dates you cannot move.
- Fixed dates first. Public holidays, Ramadan and the two Eids, national days, your company anniversary and year-end.
- Your business rhythm. Peak seasons, financial results, appraisal cycles, budget season and survey windows. Avoid launching anything in the busiest weeks.
- One objective per quarter. For example: belonging in the first quarter, recognition in the second, wellbeing and family in the third, learning and reflection in the fourth.
- One or two moments a month. Fewer moments, done properly, beat a crowded calendar that nobody can staff.
- Owners and budget. Every moment needs one owner and a budget decided in January — not the week before.
- A way to tell if it worked. Participation by site and shift, and one pulse question each quarter.
What engagement ideas work for each month?
The table gives one or two ideas per month, the objective each serves, and how much it asks of the HR team. Adapt them; the point is to choose, not to do everything.
| Month | Idea | Objective | Effort for HR | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | A one-page letter from the CEO on the year ahead, and each team writing its one promise for 2027 | Belonging | Low | People commit to what they helped write |
| January | Thank the people behind last year's results whom nobody saw | Recognition | Low | Quiet contributors are the ones most likely to leave unnoticed |
| February | A Ramadan rhythm: a riddle a day with winners, care messages on sleep and hydration, meetings moved to fasting-friendly hours | Belonging and wellbeing | Medium | Small daily moments make the whole month feel cared for |
| February | The staff iftar, planned as an evening people remember, not a buffet | Belonging | High | One evening can carry a whole year's sense of belonging |
| March | Eid gifts that suit the moment, and a welcome-back morning after the break | Belonging | Medium | The return to work sets the tone for the next quarter |
| March | Women's Month: colleagues' stories in their own words, after Eid | Belonging and inclusion | Medium | Real stories land where slogans do not |
| April | Recognise people who reported near-misses or improved safety | Recognition | Low | It rewards the behaviour you most need on the floor |
| May | A public thank-you to frontline and operations teams on Labour Day | Recognition | Low | It names work that is usually invisible |
| May | Recognition for nurses and clinical teams on International Nurses Day, if you have them | Recognition | Low | Professional pride is a strong motive |
| June | A mid-year pulse survey and a one-page answer on what changed | Voice | Low | Showing action is what keeps people answering |
| July | A family day or a summer activity for employees' children | Wellbeing and family | High | Families see the employer people talk about at home |
| August | Back-to-school support for parents: flexible hours on the first school day, supplies | Wellbeing and family | Low | A small, practical help at an expensive time |
| September | Saudi National Day employee stories; in Egypt, the same back-to-school support when schools open | Belonging | Medium | Pride and practicality, each where it fits |
| October | Mental health support managers can use: a conversation guide, confidential help, workload checks | Wellbeing | Medium | Practical support helps more than awareness alone |
| November | International Men's Day appreciation; open year-end recognition nominations | Recognition | Low | Nominations need weeks, not days |
| December | A year-in-review film made from employees' own photos, and the 2028 calendar drafted | Reflection | Medium | People remember a year they can see themselves in |

| Sun 10 Oct | World Mental Health Day | Global | Practical support, not a webinar | 48% of employees in the Middle East and North Africa report a lot of daily stress (Gallup, three-year average to 2025) |
| Fri 19 Nov | International Men's Day | Global | Appreciation for the men on the team | A day rarely marked, so it is noticed |
Three scheduling notes for 2027. Employee Appreciation Day, often marked on the first Friday of March in other countries, falls on Friday 5 March — a weekend day inside Ramadan in both countries — so fold it into the Eid return instead. Labour Day (Saturday 1 May) and International Men's Day (Friday 19 November) also fall on weekend days, so hold those moments on the nearest working day. And keep surveys away from the last ten days of Ramadan and the two Eid weeks.
How do you plan Ramadan 2027 at work?
Start now. Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 and end with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, so the planning, suppliers and approvals all fall in January.
- Agree working hours early, following the official decision for your sector, and move recurring meetings to hours that suit fasting colleagues.
- Plan a rhythm, not a single event: small daily moments, one or two shared evenings, and care for the people working through iftar or night shifts.
- Decide Eid gifts by mid-January, so they arrive on time and feel considered.
- Avoid launches and surveys in the last ten days of the month.
Our Ramadan programme runs the whole month — from the daily riddles to the staff iftar — and our Eid programme closes the season with greetings, gifts and a moment before the holiday.
How do you keep a calendar from becoming a list of parties?
By tying every moment to an objective and checking who it reached.
- Include every shift and site. A moment that only reaches head office tells the night shift where it stands.
- Make participation free and voluntary. Compulsory fun is a contradiction that people feel.
- Give team events a goal and a debrief. Without both, an outing is a day off — not team building that changes how teams work.
- Measure who took part, by site, shift and level, not only how many.
- Ask one question each quarter, such as "In the past three months, I felt part of something at work," and watch the trend.
- Connect moments to recognition, so celebration rewards the behaviour you want — see our 5Ws and 1H recognition model.
Frequently asked questions
What are good monthly engagement activities for employees?
One moment a month tied to a local date or a business milestone: a Ramadan rhythm, an Eid welcome-back morning, a safety recognition day, a mid-year pulse, a family day in summer, mental health support in October and year-end recognition in December.
What engagement ideas work for small companies?
Pick a few ideas from the monthly table, keep them small, and let the founder or manager lead them: a letter and team promises in January, a riddle a day in Ramadan, a welcome-back breakfast after each Eid, specific thank-yous on Labour Day and a year-in-review made from people's own photos.
What engagement activities work for factory and frontline workers?
Short, on-site moments that fit around shifts: recognition at the start of a shift, food during Ramadan night shifts, safety recognition, a family day, and leaders visiting the floor. Anything that needs a laptop or a long meeting will not reach them.
When is Ramadan 2027?
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr expected around 9 March. The exact dates depend on the moon sighting and the official announcements.
Should employee engagement activities be mandatory?
No. Make them easy to join and worth joining. Mandatory participation turns a moment of belonging into an obligation, and people notice the difference.
